President/CEO Towan Isom Shares Career Insight with Undergraduates

April 30, 2013 — Washington, D.C.

In a time when roughly 50% of college graduates are unemployed, according to a Rutgers University study, the leap from college to career is one of the most intimidating transitions young professionals face.

On April 19, Isom Global Strategies (IGS) participated in the first Annual Mixer hosted by the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) of George Mason University and its counterpart from Virginia Commonwealth University. The event was held at the American Islamic Congress Headquarters in Washington, D.C. IGS President/CEO Towan Isom served on a panel of esteemed public relations professionals to give advice to undergraduate students.

Along with Isom, the panel consisted of Commander Brook DeWalt, a U.S. Navy Public Affairs officer; Ryan Tronovitch, a media relations professional with the local Major League Soccer (MLS) team, D.C. United; and Samantha Villegas, the current President of the National Capital Chapter of the PRSA.

Isom, author of Chasing Greatness: The Young Professional’s Guide to a Dynamic Life (2010), recognizes the importance of outreach and fostering knowledge in developing professionals. “It was an inspiring moment for me to speak to and interact with students with such hunger and enthusiasm for their industry,” says Isom. “These are the programs and outreach I participated in while in college, and now I’ve come full circle. Amazing!”

After the panel discussion, the students had the opportunity to go on speed rounds with volunteer PR professionals to get their resumes critiqued and receive one-on-one advice. IGS’ Jacky Yoo and Shardia Thomas were on site to meet with the students and offer their insights on the job hunt process. The mixer is the third event IGS has participated in with GMU.
