Isom Global Strategies (IGS), hosted 21 students representing over half a dozen colleges and universities in the Washington, D.C. metro area at its first millennial-centric event, Share the Love: Millennial Networking. With 50 percent of IGS’ staff comprised of millennials, leadership has observed what works, and what can be improved upon in engaging this young employee base, which makes up 40 percent of the unemployed population in America.
Towan Isom, IGS President and CEO, also shared her secrets on finding success in strategic communications and marketing, and leveraged the event to create thought-provoking dialogue.
Most students represented local chapters of the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA), with backgrounds in communications, behavioral sciences, business, and information technology. George Mason University, George Washington University, Howard University, University of Maryland, and Bowie State University were among the represented institutions.
The workshop was themed around the Valentine’s Day holiday, and marked the first public event hosted at IGS’ new headquarters, located in downtown Washington, D.C. The two-hour event consisted of a “Build your Brand” strategy session, a resume-building workshop, and a networking reception with communication professionals from IGS and other organizations in the metropolitan area.
IGS shared “tough love” as leadership spoke candidly on the expectations that employers have for today’s employees, specifically millennials. The relationship between millennials and older generations was a highlighted topic of conversation throughout the event. Students took advantage of the Q&A segment by eagerly asking questions on asking for a raise, establishing confidence in the workplace, and crafting a winning resume.
Isom led the brand-building workshop and commended millennials’ optimistic perspectives.
“As a CEO, I love the energy and creative outlook that millennials bring into the office,” said Isom. “They have a unique confidence and passion that no other generation has witnessed but sometimes that energy has to be tempered with experience to be successful. There’s so much for them to learn and manage to be successful in the marketplace. I wanted to share with them what other executives are saying so they can be more successful.”
